Wrist & Ankle Measurement Guide

Accurate measurement of wrist and ankle circumference for the Genetic Muscle Mass Limit calculator

These two measurements determine your bone structure and frame size. Use a flexible measuring tape and measure bare skin without compressing the tissue.

🧬
Why bone structure matters Wrist and ankle circumference reflect the density and size of your skeletal frame. Larger frame = greater potential for muscle mass.
Wrist measurement
1 Wrist Circumference

Measure at the narrowest point of the wrist β€” just distal to the styloid processes of the radius and ulna.

1 Extend your arm with palm facing up and hand relaxed
2 Locate the narrowest point β€” just above the wrist joint, below the two bony bumps on the sides
3 Wrap the tape snugly around the wrist β€” it should be flat but not compressing the skin
4 Read the measurement while keeping the hand relaxed. Record to the nearest 0.1 cm
πŸ’‘ Typical wrist range: 14-20 cm men, 13-17 cm women. Measure non-dominant hand.
Ankle measurement
2 Ankle Circumference

Measure at the narrowest point of the ankle β€” just above the malleoli. The tape goes above the bones, not through them.

1 Stand upright with your weight evenly distributed, or sit with the foot resting flat
2 Locate the two ankle bones β€” use them as a reference point, then position the tape just above them
3 Wrap the tape horizontally just above the ankle bones β€” this is the narrowest point of the ankle
4 Keep the tape snug but not tight. Record to the nearest 0.1 cm
πŸ’‘ Typical ankle range: 19-25 cm men, 17-22 cm women. Measure both, use average or larger.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌
Measuring over clothing

Always measure bare skin β€” fabric adds thickness and distorts the reading.

❌
Tape at an angle

Keep the tape perfectly horizontal and parallel to the floor for both measurements.

❌
Compressing the skin

The tape should be snug β€” touching the skin all around β€” but not indenting it.

❌
Wrong measurement point

Wrist: narrowest point below the wrist joint. Ankle: narrowest point above the ankle bones, not through them.
